Compress PDF shrinks file size two ways: Optimize drops metadata, page thumbnails, and embedded files while keeping every page's text fully selectable — typically 0–20% smaller, best for ordinary documents. Strong mode rasterizes each page at a chosen DPI and JPEG quality and rebuilds the PDF from those images, which can shrink a scanned document dramatically at the cost of making its text no longer selectable (Image to Text can OCR it back afterward).
